About this trip

Did you already visit the main attractions but you want to have a deeper knowledge of Napoli? We’ll bring you to its inside, where layers of culture and history wait to be unraveled!
Going down a comfortable 136 steps, 130 ft below ground, we’ll start from the tuffaceous cavities excavated in the Greek era (IV centuries B.C.), and exploited as cisterns for 23 centuries. The setting is full of space and light, except for a short and charming passage (optional) where everyone is given a candle to light their own path. Suggestive but safe, don’t worry: all surfaces are suitable for our 1-hour walking. We’ll jump then few centuries ahead in time to discover the air raid shelters from World War II and the War Museum.

But inside the darkness of the underground of Naples not everything belongs to the past. In a seemingly hostile environment, the bowels of the earth, life grows protected from acid rain, pollution, harmful microorganisms and even humans: the Hypogeum Gardens. The idea of creating them was born during the international Expo Milano 2015  and is dedicated to the Earth’s power. Now this place engages universities and botanists using the Hypogeum Gardens for the scientific researches on a national and global scale and attracts curious visitors with its lush vegetation.

We will proceed to a Neapolitan house commonly called “low” because of its street-level location, where, you’ll find a hidden entrance to the ancient theater of Neapolis. Emperor Nero himself had a dressing room here when he performed his shows in Naples. Last but not least, the Summa Cavea, a fraction of the Roman Theater. You’ll also see an exhibition of “scarabattoli” religious artifacts, ancient Roman and Greek architecture and the Greek theater located in Cinquesanti alley, inside of which were newly discovered sewers from the Bourbon period.
